I'm not convinced by that, Allen, though I do know that Hays reads it that way, along with a few others. I completely resonate with the larger theological construction, but I don't see Paul citing the Habakkuk text that way.

Tim, what do you think of Douglas Campbell's suggestion that Paul read Habakkuk Christologically, i.e. he took 'the righteous one' as a reference to Jesus (perhaps as the representative person for Israel) who lives (despite the powers) because of his faith/faithfulness (vindicated by resurrection), with the consequence that we (who are in Christ) live (participate in his life) also?

One more thing, Tim. Take a look at the textual history of Hab 2:4 and you'll see that there was some question over whether "his faithfulness" in "the righteous will live by his faithfulness" in Hab 2:4 referred to God's faithfulness or the righteous one's faithfulness. Some texts and translations go one way, some go another. Interestingly, Paul's quotation of Hab 2:4 keeps it ambiguous. I've long suspected that was intentional.
