Reblogged this on <a href="http://sunestauromai.wordpress.com/2012/11/02/5547/" rel="nofollow">συνεσταύρωμαι: living the crucified life</a> and commented:
This is really great stuff about going from the Seminary (or even Bible college) classroom to the pulpit. I most appreciated points 4 & 5 as so many of us as Bible college or Seminary graduates need to take all that we learn and not toss it, but translate it into everyday life-changing transformation language - people need personal and deep level transformation, not just a bunch of information. This does not mean information is not good or useful, it just means you need to sift through the information and then communicate it in a way that promotes life change and transformation! That is effective pastoral ministry, even leadership. Thanks Tim for another great post. :-)

Dr. Gombis, I read Psalm 131 today during my morning reading and I had to comment on hos this blog post (and our countless classroom discussions) touched a chord in my heart.
There is something to be said about a humility before God which admits one does not know, or need to engage with, all the complexities of life. Inside suggestions 2 and 3 you touch upon this in a beautiful way. As Christians we desire to know and understand God (and His Word) more thoroughly and intimately each and every day. The more we know Him (being filled with His knowledge and fullness: e.g. Colossians), the more we must admit that we do not know.
Rather than arrogantly setting ourselves out on a quest to "discover" God and His truths, thus becoming "experts" who can look upon the uneducated peons in our pews in condescending disgust, let us desire to be humble in our walk with God. Well, this leads into the discussion of Cruciformity... and that is a different blog post.
Thanks for teaching (and blogging) with a heart of humility. God is using you mightily to mold the hearts and lives of those you teach.

You know what's funny is that I laugh about business classes...taught mostly by professors who have doctorates but no real world business experience. I own my own business and have never have taken a business class in my life. Hmmmm...maybe I should be a Pastor - at least I have a minor in Bible (but that may be too dangerous)! I think too many of our guys right out of seminary take things much too seriously and it is good to hear your advise on that issue! A real education is knowing how to deal with real life and real people with real issues - aren't there internships for that? Live Life - Love People - Love God.

Wow. Thanks for this blog brother. As a seminarian I can already see how I can do a better job at putting all 5 of these into practice lol. I loved the last line "They may never find out how smart you really are, but, again, you’ll enjoy a long ministry with happy people." That's a good word. Thanks again.
