I’m teaching a two-week intensive course on Ephesians beginning today. It would’ve started on Monday were it not for the “polar vortex” that shut down West Michigan for a few days.
With every new semester, I think of this prayer for Bible study from the BCP:
Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Tim Cole
Herr Professor: This is an example of the wisdom of the BCP, rooted in Scripture, to the point, and yet brief. I often use this prayer in our worship before either the Public Reading of Scripture (OT, Gospel, Epistle) or the Exposition itself. Thanks for sharing it with us. May Christ enable all of us who teach—both to open the Book (Luke 4:17) as well as to open the Scriptures (Luke 4: 32) just as He did. Stay warm there in West Michigan while you unpack Ephesians. Would enjoy hearing your work on this extravagant epistle.
